Bet You Can’t Give It Up
Pew Internet Research reminds us that the 25th anniversary of the World Wide Web is in March. They date the occasion to publication of a now-famous paper by Tim Berners-Lee proposing an information management system — ‘distributed hypertext’ — that became the conceptual and architectural structure for the Web.
To mark the occasion, they’ve compiled a heap of information about use of and attitudes toward the internet, which is presented in The Web at 25 in the US.
By 1995, 14% of American adults had internet access, most with dial-up modem connections (remember those?). Just 2% of users were “screaming along” with an 28.8 modem. I had one of those.
How badly do you need the net? Here’s one of Pew’s findings:
I’d give up my cell phone for the internet any day!
Tom
I’m with you, Tom! The reason I like the cell phone is that it’s the internet in my pocket. I grumble when it rings.
