Stories For Relationship Building Too

A couple of weeks ago I posted on the importance of stories to support fundraising. It goes without saying that stories support donor engagement of all kinds. Kimberly Haywood at the March of Dimes provided this impressive illustration … “I wanted to let you know the March of Dimes did something interesting for our Prematurity […]

Which Test Won?

Which Test Won? is a nifty e-newsletter that features results of a variety of head-to-head tests in the online arena — homepage design, copy tests, offer tests, social marketing, etc. They recently announced their first batch of ‘winners’ from a group of tests supplied by over 100 marketers. What you’ll see when you click here […]

New Rainbow Warrior For Sale

Bryan Miller blogging at Giving in a digital world says this: “Crowdfunding websites that let you contribute to specific projects are nothing new, but anewwarrior.greenpeace.org launched by Greenpeace to generate funds for their new Rainbow Warrior has lifted the bar to a new level in terms of on-site experience.” And he is spot on. This […]

Too Tired To Choose

Here’s an interesting — but perhaps, DUH! — item from Neuromarketing about ‘choice fatigue‘. People get tired of making choices … and this shows up in a variety of ways if they’re asked to keep on choosing. In one study, researchers found that items placed farther down voting ballots drew less votes (i.e., more abstentions). […]

Online Is 8% of Charitable Giving

7.6% to be exact. That’s a key finding in Blackbaud’s just-released 2010 Online Giving Report. For this purpose, online giving is measured against total fundraising revenue reported to the IRS by organizations studied. The Report includes 24 months of online giving data from 1,812 nonprofit organizations from The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving, online major […]

Name A Roach

I once had to raise money for a far-flung conservation program seeking to restore habitat for endangered species. A terrifically successful program. The problem was that we had no ‘charismatic’ species in our repertoire … just a bunch of woodpeckers, frogs and such. So it was a struggle. That’s why I adore this contrarian approach […]

Good News About Mobile Donors

The mGive Foundation has released a survey indicating that mobile donors — whose giving experience normally involves texting $10 or $25 in response to an emergency appeal — can be cultivated through multiple channels. Just like most other donors (see yesterday’s Agitator post, What Is Integrated Marketing?). Here are some key findings: Sixty-two percent (62%) […]

What Is Integrated Marketing?

Integrated marketing. We’re all for it, aren’t we? But exactly what do we mean? Here’s a definition offered by Convio’s Chief Technology Officer, Dave Hart: “In the nonprofit world, true integrated marketing is centered around the concept of having a comprehensive view of the constituent. Ideally, the organization has full access to online engagement data […]

Email, Keep Your Chin Up

New email stats from digital metrics firm comScore indicate a shift is underway, as traffic to web-based email services declined 6%, while the number of consumers accessing their email via mobile devices increased 36%. I’m not sure this increase in mobile access is good news for online fundraisers, because I just can’t see donors making […]

Giving Attitudes Surveyed By Harris Interactive

Don’t know how I missed this, but back in November Harris Interactive released this very interesting survey on the charitable giving habits and plans of Americans. Their report includes some interesting trend data comparing 2007 and 2010 responses. Most respondents (48%) categorize themselves as follows: “I make some kind of small contribution of time and/or […]

Ask A Behavioral Scientist

    Behavioral Science Q & A

Q: As a designer who works with non-profits on fundraising strategy, I see the language like the following: “Our supporters help empower every girl, ensuring she has the resources she needs.” I do not think the word “help” is useful–I think “Our supporters empower every girl, ensuring she has the resources she needs. ” is much more engaging. Thoughts?

Whether “help” is more engaging or not really depends on the framing and context. The word help can sometimes weaken the perceived agency of the supporter, making their role feel secondary rather than central (your point). On the other hand, help can also signal collaboration rather than implying full ownership of the outcome, which might […]

Q: We started offering a donor cover option last april 1. The data to date suggests this may be dampening giving.eg. those who say yes to donor cover have a lower average gift (based on analysis of 6000+ gifts). I’m wondering if those who give lower gifts feel more guilt and therefore say yes to donor cover or if the presence of donor cover is making people adjust (lower) their gift size to accommodate the extra 3%. Would love any insights you have.

Great question! Here’s how behavioral science can help unpack what might be happening: Pain of Paying: Even a small extra charge can make giving feel more transactional than emotional, potentially reducing generosity. Fairness Concerns: Some donors might perceive donor cover as a surcharge rather than a contribution to the cause. If they feel the charity […]

Q: When writing an appeal, I waffle back and forth between writing “Your gift CAN…” or “Your gift WILL…” Any studies of which of these two words is best for an appeal?

The choice between “Your gift CAN…” and “Your gift WILL…” taps into the psychological framing of certainty vs. possibility. Currently, there is no academic research directly comparing these two framings in charitable appeals. However, I suspect no framing is universally better—the outcome likely depends on your target audience and the campaign’s goal. Here are some thoughts: Certainty Framing – […]

Q: Do you have any insight on whether integrating an individual giving appeal with other comms from the charity in both appearance and messaging can uplift results? Or does the actual appeal become ‘lost’ for lack of stand-out?

Integrating an individual giving appeal with other communications from a charity can have both positive and negative effects, and the outcome largely depends on how it’s executed. Advantages of Integration Brand Consistency: Maintaining a consistent appearance and messaging across all communications can reinforce the org’s brand identity and strengthen brand recognition and trust among your […]

Q: Is there any research on response rate impact in direct mail when referring to a sustainer gift as ongoing or recurring (catching all frequencies) v. monthly or annual?

I’m not aware of any in-market tests specifically comparing recurring vs. gift frequency language. I suspect the answer might not be the same with all gift frequencies, nor with all people. It sounds like a great opportunity for you to test and find out what works for your audience. Based on the literature, here’s a couple […]

Q: A major conservation nonprofit sends me lots of mail, many of which have on the envelope “time to renew” or “2nd notice.” I find this practice deceptive, especially as I haven’t given to said organization since 1997. It must be effective or they wouldn’t do it. But is it ethical?

Based on what we know from existing data, those renewal notices can actually be pretty effective in getting people to donate. They tap into our psychology – creating a sense of urgency, reminding us of past support, and using personalization to make the message hit home. They’re playing on our natural tendencies to feel obligated […]
