Dealing With Gloomy News

The Chronicle of Philanthropy reports that two-thirds of donors are planning to cut back their giving in the balance of the year, blaming the sour economy.

And this Peter Hart survey for Citibank provides an excellent look at the depth of the public’s economic gloom.

What to do?

Katya Andresen at Katya’s Nonprofit Marketing Blog offers these excellent seven tips for taking care of your existing donors in trying times:

  1. Give your donors happiness — They want a ‘helper’s high’, she says. I like that phrase.
  2. Show value — be as concrete as possible about what the donor’s gift will accomplish.
  3. Be flexible — in your asks.
  4. Be personal — show them you know them (your ‘competitors’ might not).
  5. Do a great job with your online outreach — there’s evidence that online donors are a bit better off and more likely to give.
  6. Be grateful — sincerely tell them what they mean to your organization.
  7. Learn — if #1-6 aren’t working, it’s time to start calling donors and find out why you’re failing to connect.

Actually, these are best practices, bad times or good.
