Dig Yourself A Hole
Here’s some elegantly simply advice from biz guru Seth Godin. It’s quite succinct, so I’ll reproduce in full …
Dig yourself a hole
Make big promises.
Burn your boats.
Set yourself up in a place where you have few options and the stakes are high.
Focused energy and serious intent will push you to do your best work. You have nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. (Better than the alternative).
Amen!
What I hear him saying is make public commitments, big ones.
We all have ‘to do’ lists, private goals for the year, personal milestones, even diets, which we strive to meet to some degree or another.
But when you make a big public commitment, something changes. You’ve put yourself under extra scrutiny and pressure. Your motivation level goes up, no matter how highly motivated a person you might already be in that private heart and soul of yours.
Adding this kind of self-imposed pressure is not everybody’s cup of tea. It’s not for the faint-hearted. As Godin says, you have “nowhere to hide”!
But if you’re courageous enough, it will pull out your best work. And that’s what your organization needs.
