Doing Your Best Work
You’re probably reading this on Monday morning. Are you going to do your best work this week?
Indeed, what motivates you to do your best work?
A deadline, prospect of recognition by peers or superiors, fear of failure, the thrill of creating something new, the goal itself (personal or institutional), team élan, something much deeper and haunting (as in, “I’ve never been able to impress my Mom/Dad!”)?
Something else?
An Agitator Raise?!
In his post, Your discomfort zone, Seth Godin notes that most of us need an external stimulus to do our best work. You’ve all heard it — and probably been urged — “Get out of your comfort zone!”
But if we pick the wrong stimulus, we wind up hurting ourselves … “instead of fueling the work”. Says Godin: “The argument can be made that the biggest difference between a professional, an amateur and someone who’s not even participating is their choice of discomfort.”
What motivates you to do your best work?

P.S. Of course, there’s always the Wally solution …
