Duh, Why Didn’t I Think Of That?

Need some out-of-the-box fundraising advice?
It’s summertime … you must have some interns lying about … ask them!
As reported by Forbes, Morgan Stanley’s media research department recently asked one of its 15-year-old interns to write a paper describing his generation’s media habits. The memo bluntly said:
- We won’t pay for any online content
- We ignore ads
- Twitter is a waste of time
Apparently the memo has become the rage in advertising circles. Out of the mouths of babes!
Seriously, when was the last time you had really fresh eyes look at the face your nonprofit is presenting to the world … and asked how they would do it?
Maybe 9 out of 10 of their ideas will be duds … been there, done that; not practical; whatever.
But #10 could be a smash … or at least a "DUH, why didn’t I think of that!"

Yesterday – when someone came in to talk to us about social media strategy.
I invited our intern to sit in on the presentation and frequently asked her about her and her friends facebook usage as it applied to the presentation we were seeing.
She told us that she and all her friends are “addicted” to it and we talked about how they use it and why. Twitter is useless to the under 35 crowd – we know that different demographics use social media differently… and use different kinds of social media.
I think that’s handy and provides clearly delineation for your communications on those platforms. I am of the mind that any time you want to talk to someone, the best way to do so, is to ask them how they want to be communicated with.
