E-Commerce Spending Up

May 24, 2010      Admin

comScore reports that e-commerce spending in the US was up 10% in the first quarter of 2010 over the same period in 2009, the second consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth, after four quarters of declining e-commerce spending.

A total of $34 billion was spent online in the 1QTR, excluding spending on autos, travel and online auctions.

I guess online fundraisers would say “welcome to the party” to their online retail compatriots!

In 2008, online retail spending totaled $130.1 billion; in 2009, the total was a virtually identical $129.8 billion. Slightly negative growth.

By contrast, both Blackbaud and Convio reported strong growth in 2009 online giving over 2008, with Blackbaud reporting 21% growth for 1700 clients with data for year-to-year comparison and Convio reporting 14% growth for 337 such clients. Growth that’s all the more remarkable seen in the context of essentially flat online retail spending.

Who says America doesn’t have a heart?!
