Facebook Privacy Woes

With so many nonprofits working Facebook into their marketing strategies, it behooves us all to keep an eye on their privacy controversy.

Here’s an excellent report on the matter from Bloomberg.

It notes that Facebook, now at 519 million users, shows no sign of slowing growth. Traffic was up nearly 5% in the week after the controversy over personal data sharing erupted, with Facebook accounting for 8.5% of all Internet visits.

Facebook has made some seemingly reluctant moves in the last few days to enable users to better control their personal data, but Facebook czar Mark Zuckerberg comes across as not really giving a damn about the issue. From a distance, he appears to suffer from the hubris of bigness … as in, they need us so much they can’t leave even if we abuse them.

Facebook controls its data (!) re un-subscribes from the service, so there’s no telling how concerned users are, or aren’t. A website called “We’re Quitting Facebook” has only 22,533 enlistees as I write.

Apart from possibly making your donors and activists squeamish about using Facebook, such a high profile controversy over personal data privacy on social nets bleeds over and impacts the acceptability of broader fundraising practices surrounding all kinds of donor research and profiling … as Roger discussed earlier this week.

We’re all better off if Facebook gets serious about these issues before getting hammered by regulatory authorities around the planet. So, you don’t have to quit Facebook, but you might consider sending a strongly worded message to Mark Zuckerberg!
