Get A Lift (Letter)

May 28, 2010      Admin

I like this advice from copywriter Ivan Levison, presented in DirectMarketingIQ. It’s simple, specific, and testable.

He’s talking about the proven efficacy of the lift letter in direct mail, and offers these tips:

  1. Keep it small
  2. Fold it
  3. Stick to one point
  4. Keep it personal
  5. Have it signed by an “authority”

Good points. Read the entire piece.

Nonprofit-specific addition to “have it signed by an ‘authority’, Tom: donors and volunteers also qualify. I can think of one lift letter in particular, in an upgrade package, with a donor/volunteer signer. It brought in an additional $250K. So I’d say it’s worth testing, at least. (btw, Ivan Levison’s e-newsletter, The Levison Letter, is perennially excellent. Highly recommended to all direct response fans.) All best, Lisa
