Here’s Your Year-End Bonus!

October 25, 2024      Roger Craver

This isn’t a year-end bonus check. It’s better.

It’s a gift that will sharpen your results, build your reputation, and grow your organization’s bottom line for years to come.

That’s what Thankology, Lisa Sargent’s new book, is. A gift for you, your team, and your donors. Simple, clear, and worth more than any check. Even better, it’s arriving just in time for you to benefit at year end and for the year ahead.

Why Thankology is So Valuable Right Now and For Years to Come

As fundraisers, we often find ourselves at the intersection of need and generosity.  Sadly, too many of us behave as though  “Generosity” is a one-way street.

Few realize that long-term success hinges not just on the ability to ask, but on the grace with which we express thanks.

In Thankology,  Lisa Sargent, a bright star in the galaxy of our trade,  offers a long-awaited exploration into the delicate yet powerful art of gratitude, transforming it into a medley of science  and art that promises to revolutionize the way we engage with our donors.

A Decade of Anticipation. Expectations Exceeded.

For years Lisa has shared her wisdom and experience through her Thank You Clinic on SOFII.  NOW…after years of anticipation the arrival of Thankology feels nothing short of monumental.

In fact it’s just that.  A monumental guide that exceeds expectations, providing not only the theoretical underpinnings of gratitude but also practical, actionable insights that fundraisers can implement immediately.

The book’s true genius lies in its simplicity. It avoids over-complication, distilling the essence of gratitude into clear lessons that are accessible to everyone, regardless of experience level. The practical examples are particularly valuable, offering fundraisers real-world applications that can be put into practice from day one.

[Editor’s note:  The book is available from the Civic Sector Press, the publisher, and from Amazon in the US and Amazon in the UK ]

Gratitude: The Forgotten Art

The central thesis of Thankology is that gratitude is not just a nicety but a critical component of any successful fundraising strategy. The book argues persuasively that in a world overwhelmed by digital noise and transactional relationships, genuine, heartfelt thanks can cut through the clutter and forge lasting connections with donors.

Lisa delves into the psychology of gratitude, explaining how simple acts of thanks can lead to increased donor retention, larger gifts, and stronger relationships. The book is replete with examples from both the non-profit and corporate worlds, showing how organizations that prioritize gratitude see tangible benefits.

A Practical Guide for Every Fundraiser

What sets Thankology apart is its practical approach. Heralded in the Foreward by veteran Ken Burnett,  each chapter concludes with actionable steps that fundraisers can take to enhance their gratitude efforts. Whether it’s crafting the perfect thank-you note, planning a donor appreciation event, or simply making gratitude a part of your daily routine, Lisa provides clear, concise guidance.

Thankology also addresses common pitfalls, such as insincere thanks or gratitude that feels like an afterthought. It offers strategies for ensuring that your expressions of thanks are not just routine, but meaningful and impactful.

Those addicted to autoresponders and thankless ‘thank you’ form letters  believing that’s enough  are merely engaging in what I call “non-creative receipting.”  Stop it!  Read and heed Lisa’s proven advice.

This Book Spits Out Gold

For fundraisers, Thankology is not just a book; it’s a bonanza. The insights and strategies contained within its pages are likely to save you its purchase price many times over –each and every day. By following its advice, you’ll not only  boost your retention rates, donor lifetime value, second-gift and monthly gift conversions,  but also cultivate a culture of gratitude that will resonate throughout your organization.

Thankology is a must-read for anyone in our world. It offers a powerful reminder that while asking is important, thanking is essential. By mastering the art of gratitude, organizations can build stronger, more enduring relationships with their donors, leading to greater success and fulfillment.

This book is destined to become a classic in the field, and it’s one I cannot recommend highly enough. In fact, I’m buying and sending Thankology to every CEO of every organization I’ve donated to, but never sent me a proper thank you. That’s lot of books for a lot of lost opportunities. For their organization’s benefit I’m hoping Thankology  will set them straight.

Roger

P.S.  What were the results of  ‘pre-thank’ test where an organization sent a simple thank-you card to 25,000 of their highest donors at the beginning of the year, without any ask or reply piece?

SPOILER ALERT: The group that received the thank-you card gave almost $450,000 more that year compared to the group that did not receive the card.”

You’ll find a treasure trove of gems like this in Thankology.

Roger, I’m overwhelmed. You officially have me sitting me before my keyboard, tears of thanks in my eyes, with no idea how to adequately express what your articulate, thoughtful, no-BS post means to me… and your vote of confidence in spreading the word about Thankology and giving it a home in The Agitator’s esteemed archives.

So for now I’ll simply say, Thank you. For never giving up on this book’s journey these many (MANY) years. For believing in the power of gratitude. And for being such an incredible light to me, and to the sector. We are all better for it. Here’s to better thanking for all! Lisa xx

Lisa, how typically delightful of you to thank Roger for this lovely piece. As so many have now said since hearing of this great new resource, for sure it is we who should be thanking you. Thank you for believing in yourself enough to go through the struggle of sharing it so generously with all of us, in a book. Every fundraiser should have access to their organisation’s fundraising library (how many do, I wonder?), and every fundraising library should now be rushing to get their own copies of Thankology, in sufficient quantity to properly equip all of their fundraisers to do their job better. Donors, lovely people that they are, will really love it when all of us get and live by the good sense in this book. Thank you again. Ken x

Lisa is indeed a star of the fundraising world and I can’t wait to read her book. Everyone who buys and reads this book will raise thousands of times (at a minimum) more money than the cost of this book. It’s a much better than having bought Apple stock at 70 cents.

Thank you for the information. I just ordered a copy from the publisher. I cannot wait! Another big thank you for all the lessons from the Agitator and others in the development community who share. You’ve done so much for my personal growth.

  6. Thank you for this lovely review, Roger. I’ve been eagerly awaiting this book from Lisa. She’s been one of my most-loved teachers… and also friend.

We all too often think of thank you as an afterthought or even a chore. It’s not that at all, done well. It’s just more joy for everyone!

  7. well deserved Lisa, can’t wait to read it! Thanking is so hugely important! Congratulations. Cheers, erica
