comScore Networks has just released data on consumer online retail spending on US websites for the holiday season to date.

For the month of November (through Monday the 27th), total online retail spending reached $9.48 billion, a 24% increase over the same period last year. Monday the 27th was the single largest retail e-commerce day in history, with $608 million spent as folks returned well-fed – and apparently feeling flush – to their work computers! [All figures exclude auction sites, travel, and corporate purchases.]

We think these numbers represent good news for nonprofit fundraisers.

For the immediate term, it looks like folks are ready to spend — and hopefully that means contribute as well — as the year ends.

Longer term, the more comfortable consumers become with online purchasing, the more responsive they will become to online fundraising. It's all a matter of training!
