Online Is 8% of Charitable Giving

February 17, 2011      Admin

7.6% to be exact. That’s a key finding in Blackbaud’s just-released 2010 Online Giving Report. For this purpose, online giving is measured against total fundraising revenue reported to the IRS by organizations studied.

The Report includes 24 months of online giving data from 1,812 nonprofit organizations from The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving, online major giving data from 2,190 nonprofits, and both online and offline data representing $5.1 billion in total fundraising from 1,438 nonprofits. I.e., hard data, not survey stuff.

Other key findings:

  • Online giving in 2010 was up 34.5% over 2009, with large organizations ($10M+ revenue) setting the pace at 56% year-over-year growth.
  • The International Affairs and Health Care sectors now receive more than 10% of their total fundraising from online giving. [Again, Haiti giving blasted the ‘International Affairs’ sector ahead.]
  • The last three months of 2010 accounted for 31% of the year’s online giving. [Actually, that percentage is suppressed a bit by the fact that January accounted for a hefty 18% of the year’s online giving, due to Haiti earthquake relief giving. Usually, December alone accounts for one-third of online giving … probably your nonprofit’s profile if you’re not in the disaster relief business.]
  • 88% of nonprofits studied had at least one online gift of $1000 or more.

If you’re in the online fundraising biz — and who isn’t?! — this is a ‘must-read’ report.

I have just opened a consumer electronics web store and committed to donating 5% of annual profits to charity. I believe online shoppers will be excited about helping others while getting the products they need. I would encourage more companies to do this to increase the percentage of online giving.
