Sore-Eye-A-What?!
That's psoriasis … called the “Rodney Dangerfield” disease by Psoriasis Cure Now because it's a disease that gets no respect.
To build awareness and support for increased research into this affliction, Psoriasis Cure Now is sponsoring a video contest. Amateur videographers are invited to submit 30 to 60 second videos about psoriasis. The video can tug at the heartstrings or tickle the funny bone.
The grand prize is $7,500 (apparently a play on the fact that 7.5 million Americans suffer from the disease). Entries must be submitted by COB September 26. Six finalist videos will be selected as finalists for public viewing and comment by October 10. And, for those “itching to win” quickly, there's a $1,000 “Early Bird” prize for the best video submitted by August 15.
You don't have to have psoriasis to enter.
We think this is a great example of using new media to engage supporters … and possibly come up with a communications breakthrough.
Thanks to B.L. Ochman for the tip.

P.S. Speaking of contests, also check out the 2nd annual “Science Idol” competition sponsored by Union of Concerned Scientists. You must vote by July 23 for the editorial cartoons that best spoof the problem of political interference in federal government science on issues like global warming and drug safety. Winning cartoons illustrate UCS' 2008 calendar.
