The Old And The New

November 11, 2015      Tom Belford

Two stats in a recent newsletter I received were reminders that the ‘old’ and the ‘new’ can co-exist quite nicely, thank you.

On the one hand, this DM News article reports that the US Postal Service expects to deliver 15 billion pieces of holiday mail this Christmas season (including 600 million packages), a 10.5% increase over last year. Your year-end direct mail appeals will be part of that avalanche!

Worried about standing out in that crush? From DirectMarketingIQ, take a look at some of the unique packages described in Designing Direct Mail Packages That Work.

Meantime, Digital Marketing reports that as of November, 8 billion videos are viewed daily on Facebook. So, in two days, that’s more than all the messages (and packages) sent via the post over the entire holiday window. Staggering, but even more amazing given that the number was ‘only’ 4 billion in the first quarter. Some 500 million people watch videos daily on Facebook.

And then there’s YouTube, who, by the way, claims Facebook gets these numbers by ‘stealing’ videos from YouTube. See this — what else — video, explaining the ‘crime’.

Let Facebook and YouTube duke it out. I think it’s safe to say your organization had better be using online video to support your fundraising efforts.

P.S. For trivia buffs … How long does it take the fastest videos to reach 1 Billion views on YouTube? 241 days … of course these will be music videos, not polar bears on ice floes or campus scenes from your alma mater.

One response to “The Old And The New”

  1. On the subject of Old & New – Google used a newspaper insert to get people to try their “Cardboard” VR headset.

In spite of Google’s unlimited access to the finest digital tools they went “old school” to get human’s to engage with their new technology.

Multi-channel combining old & new – Innovation baby!
