Victory Is Ours!
The California “Warning Label” bill is dead. Killed in its crib by a fusillade of Agitator reader opposition and the outcry of nonprofits within California and all around the globe.
Thanks to hundreds of tweets, blog posts, emails and phone calls from Agitators who rallied to the call, Urgent Warning: Immediate Action Required, this threat has now vanished.
You’ll recall that the “Warning Label” bill would have required every charity — whether located in California or anywhere else in the world — seeking funds from any California resident would have been subject to outrageous requirements.
For example, the website of any nonprofit to which a California resident might connect would be required to provide warning language on their donate page and a link to the Attorney General’s (the chief law enforcement officer) Office website.
Now’s the time for us to thank you, the responsive Agitator community. Thanks to the dozens who shared their Tweets to others, the hundreds who emailed, and the scores of bloggers and consultants who reached out to their clients. Success!
And now’s also the time for all of us to thank Lorena Gonzalez, Chair of the California Assembly’s Appropriations Committee for preventing the bill from getting out of committee where we would have had to fight it on the floor of the Assembly.
Same with Speaker of the Assembly Anthony Rendon who helped spare us all thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands in fighting this monster.
You can email your thanks to both with a simple note. Just like you’d do for anyone who’s contributed to the health of your organization.
Dear Chair Gonzales and/or Dear Speaker Rendon,
Thank you for ensuring that Assembly Bill 2855, the “Warning Label” bill, did not get out of Committee. You have saved the taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars and the nonprofit community millions by stopping this bizarre and dangerous piece of legislation.
Again, my thanks,

Or, if you’d rather express your thanks in person, give their office a call.
Either way, here’s the contact information for your thank you:

Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon (representing LA’s District 63). (916) 319-2063. assemblymember.rendon@assembly.ca.gov
Whether by phone or email, please say ‘thank you’ today.

Thank you for leading such a marvelous charge!
I sent my thank yous. And THANK YOU for starting the brush fire.
Done from Canada!
Thanks gents.
Thank you for sounding the alarm on this one. Your leadership on this issue is greatly appreciated.
Unfortunately, whenever governments have less money to through around in an effort to buy our votes (with our own money), they turn to “consumer protection” legislation. Such legislation is low-cost (to the government), but still allows politicians to beat their chests and declare how they are on the side of the common person. This means we can expect more attempts, in California and elsewhere, to further regulate the nonprofit sector. While we should savor the victory, we should also remain vigilant.
